The short answer: A 2-piece mattress separates support from comfort. The Engineered Sleep Duo has two parts: a flippable Duo Support, a pocketed coil base with a slightly softer side and a slightly firmer side, and a separate Duo Comfort top. CLING, our patented attachment method, holds the two together so they sleep as one mattress. You can flip the support to adjust the feel, and later replace only the top instead of the whole mattress.
What is a 2-piece mattress?
A traditional one-piece mattress builds its support core and its comfort layers into a single unit. A 2-piece mattress keeps them as two separate pieces that work together. On the Duo mattress, those pieces stack like this:
- Top: Duo Comfort. The layer you feel first. Depending on the model, it is Talalay latex, memory foam, high-resiliency (HR) foam, a quilted pillow-top style layer, or coils and wool.
- In between: CLING. Our patented attachment method, which holds the Duo Comfort to the Duo Support with no zippers or straps.
- Base: Duo Support. A flippable pocketed coil base with a slightly softer side and a slightly firmer side.
Why split comfort from support?
Comfort and support are both essential to a good night's sleep, but they do not wear at the same rate. Comfort layers take the majority of the abuse from nightly sleeping and need to be replaced more often. When the comfort goes first, you are often left with a mattress that is still supportive but no longer comfortable.
A 2-piece design fixes that. There is no reason to throw away a perfectly good support, and there is no reason to keep sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress. You simply refresh the comfort. Replacing only what you need, instead of tossing the whole mattress, also keeps high-quality materials out of landfills and more money in your pocket.

How the Duo works
Duo Support: the flippable base
Every Duo is built on the Duo Support, a base of 8-inch pocket springs with firm edge support. One side has an extra comfort layer (high-resiliency foam on most models, Posturful micro-coils on the Duo Lift) that makes it slightly softer. Flip the Duo Support over, so our logo is upside down, for a slightly firmer feel. High-strength handles make flipping easy.
Duo Comfort: the top you choose
The Duo Comfort is what gives each Duo model its feel:
- Duo Latex: a Talalay latex comfort top. The Duo Latex has 2 inches of Talalay latex and stands 13 inches tall. The Duo Latex Plus has a 3-inch Talalay latex layer, a medium feel (5-7/10) and stands 14 inches tall. Compare the two in Duo Latex vs. Duo Latex Plus.
- Duo Memory: a memory foam comfort top with 3 inches of memory foam in total (a 2-inch memory foam layer plus 1 inch in the quilted panel) for a contouring, cushion-firm feel. The Duo Memory stands 13 inches tall. The Duo Memory Plus adds 2 inches of Talalay latex under the memory foam for a medium-plush feel and stands 15 inches tall.
- Duo Performance: a comfort top of 1.5 inches of Avena HR foam (softer) over 1.5 inches of Serene HR foam (firmer), with natural wool.
- Duo Essential: our firmest and most supportive Duo, with a quilted, pillow-top inspired comfort layer.
- Duo Lift: made without latex or foam. It uses over 4,000 coils, New Zealand wool and organic cotton.
CLING: what holds the two pieces together
CLING, our patented attachment method, holds the Duo Comfort to the Duo Support. There are no zippers to break and no straps to trip over, just two layers that act as one.
2-piece vs. one-piece mattress
| 2-piece Duo mattress | Typical one-piece mattress | |
|---|---|---|
| How it is built | Two pieces: a Duo Support and a Duo Comfort, held together by CLING | Support and comfort layers built into one unit |
| When the comfort wears | Replace only the Duo Comfort top | Usually replace the whole mattress |
| Changing the feel | Flip the Duo Support, use your one Comfort Exchange, or choose a new Duo Comfort Top later | Set when you buy it; adding a separate topper is the common workaround |
| Warranty | 10 years on the Duo Support, 5 years on the Duo Comfort | Varies by mattress |
Changing your mind: flip, Comfort Exchange, or a new top
- Flip the Duo Support. Turn it over at any time for a slightly softer or slightly firmer feel.
- Use your Comfort Exchange. The Duo Latex, Duo Memory, Duo Lift, Duo Essential and Duo Performance come with our 100 Night Sleep Trial. During the first 100 nights you can make one Comfort Exchange. We encourage sleeping on it for about 30 nights so your body can adjust. If you’re still not comfortable after that, you can swap to a different Duo Comfort any time during your 100 nights.
- Buy a new top later. Duo Comfort Tops are sold separately and can be purchased as a replacement for an existing Duo mattress, so you can refresh the feel without buying a new mattress.

Is a 2-piece mattress right for you?
A 2-piece mattress like the Duo is a good fit if:
- You are not sure exactly which feel you want, and you would like room to adjust after you sleep on it.
- You would rather refresh the top of your mattress than replace the whole bed.
- You want to keep good materials out of landfills by replacing only the part that wears.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 2-piece mattress the same as a mattress topper?
No. A topper is a loose layer you add on top of a finished mattress. On the Duo, the Duo Comfort is one of the mattress's two pieces, and CLING, our patented attachment method, holds it to the Duo Support so the two pieces sleep as one mattress.
Can I change the firmness of a 2-piece mattress?
On the Duo, yes. Flip the Duo Support for a slightly softer or slightly firmer feel. For a bigger change, the Duo Latex, Duo Memory, Duo Lift, Duo Essential and Duo Performance include one Comfort Exchange. If you’re still not comfortable after about 30 nights, you can use it any time during the 100 Night Sleep Trial. You can also buy a different Duo Comfort Top later.
What happens when the comfort layer wears out?
You replace only the Duo Comfort top, not the whole mattress. Duo Comfort Tops are sold separately and can be purchased as a replacement for an existing Duo mattress. A Duo Comfort Top bought on its own is non-returnable.
Does the top layer slide around?
The Duo Comfort is held to the Duo Support by CLING, our patented attachment method. There are no zippers to break and no straps to trip over, so the two layers act as one.
What warranty does a Duo mattress have?
Every Duo has a 10-year warranty on the Duo Support and a 5-year warranty on the Duo Comfort. See our warranty page for the full details.
